The earliest recordings of the Dave Brubeck Octet and the Dave Brubeck Trio were released on 78's.

In the case of the Dave Brubeck Trio the earliest recordings were recorded for and issued on the Coronet label as 78's before Fantasy bought them. These recordings were subsequently released by Fantasy on various 10”, 12” albums and of course CD.

In 2019 following research by Dave Brubeck fan, Alan Flint, it was determined that the 78rpm issue by Fantasy of “Laura” and Indiana” on Fantasy 504 were different to that issued on the Fantasy LP/CD/MC release “Distinctive Rhythm Instrumentals” and probably on all other releases by Fantasy and indeed the early Coronet release on Coronet 103.

It is assumed that Cal Tjader and Ron Crotty make up the Trio and that the recording of these tracks were probably alternative takes during the recording session in September 1949.
