Notes

This was originally released as a private recording by the Penn State Jazz Club for members only. It was pressed on red vinyl; very few copies still exist. See "Not Released" section in Recordings for details.

In 2014, Solar Records released this recording on CD.

The Penn State Jazz Club was formed in 1954 and is still in existence today. The Dave Brubeck Quartet appearance on 19th March 1955 was their first ever concert that they organised.

Note from Solar Records on CD

This release presents, for the first time ever on CD, an extremely rare early quartet performance by the Dave Brubeck Quartet with Paul Desmond. As this and other recordings from the period evidence, the Brubeck formation's fame and popularity grew by playing college campuses. This particular set was privately recorded and issued at the time in a limited edition ultra rare LP by members of the university under the title of A University Listens to Dave Brubeck. It sheds new light on the beginnings of the group, and features amazing and extended improvisations by both Brubeck and Desmond.
